A night at the theatre
My afternoon started by channel surfing in my car. I stumbled across the awesome Joel Plaskett song "Nowhere With You" on Z99. Believe me, I only visited the station because I was searching for something to listen to.
Anyway, I poked around and tried what was new with the Maritime's favourite son. He always puts on such great shows, has been to Regina a few times and he's a really underrated artist. I hadn't heard anything from him in some time.
I learned that the Galaxy Cinema in Regina is hosting a bunch of concerts on film, featuring, of course, Joel Plaskett, as well as bands like Great Lake Swimmers, Alex Cuba and Royal Wood, Thom Yorke, The White Stripes, Beck, Jarvis Cocker, Sonic Youth Jose Gonzalez, Radiohead, PJ Harvey and Super Furry Animals.
It appears the shows are in HD and dolby sound.
Here's the press release from the folks at Odeon, and a list of concerts and dates.
TORONTO - Cineplex Entertainment is inviting you to rock on at The Fall Concert Series presented on the big screen in High Definition (HD) and digital surround sound exclusively at participating Cineplex Entertainment theatres.

Coney Hatch fundraiser in Toronto
Over the years, my affinity for the band and its members continued -- I was lucky enough to meet Andy Curran a few times and see him perform as a solo artist and as a member of SoHo 69. Anyone like "No Tattoos?" He also wrote a bunch of lyrics for songs that appeared on Kim Mitchell's solo album Kimosabe, which I always thought was underrated. Curran's name pops up here and there because he now works with Rush and their record company.
I also chatted once over the phone with Carl Dixon -- he went on to play with April Wine and the Guess Who. He performed as a solo artist too, releasing a couple of CDs that didn't exactly put him on the proverbial rock map. But he continued to be a busy musician -- he often played an acoustic set and opened for other bands, April Wine included. I saw him open for the Killer Dwarfs at a club in 2001, and his version of "Pinball Wizard" was really good.
I was stunned to learn of a fundraiser happening at the Phoenix in Toronto -- seems Dixon was in a car accident in Australia. I really don't know any details, but it's cool that a bunch of Dixon's old friends from the '80s have stepped forward here. With Curran performing with Helix, Brighton Rock, Russell Graham from the Killer Dwarfs, it should be an interesting show for those of us to still sometimes pine for Canadian rock from the 1980s.
Here are a couple of links that will tell you more.......
Stay tuned for tomorrow's posting and the regular Thursday rundown of what's happing in the clubs in the Queen City this weekend......

When I was in Cuba this February, my fabulous wife and I took a fancy boat to an island where we enjoyed lobster and an afternoon on an amazing beach. Anyway, one of the highlights was chatting briefly with a nice Cuban bartender -- he was wearing a Cancer Bats t-shirt. I thought this was neat, that a fella from Cuba was helping spread the word about a Canadian band. As is the case with many locals, particularly those involved in the service industry, they are often seen wearing hats and t-shirts given to them by tourists.
I tell this story because I had forgotten to share it with Scott Middleton, Cancer Bats guitarist and owner of a new guitar. If you missed my interview with him, see the link below. And if seeing Elton John isn't your thing, then tonight's gig at The Exchange might be -- Cancer Bats headline while Black Lung and Johnny Truant open up.
Tickets are cheaper, and it'll be louder. Sounds like a nice idea to me.

Elton is coming.
Well, lots of people are talking about Elton John - the nutty fella is in Saskatchewan. He performs tonight in Saskatoon before coming to Regina for two shows on Tuesday and Wednesday as part of his tour of Western Canada. I gather from the reviews I've read -- okay, I've only read two -- is that the show is a little on the short side, but is jam-packed with his old stuff.
Here's what the Calgary Herald said after he performed in Calgary on Friday.....
