The weekend in music

Hello friends....

Well, I am almost recovered from the flu, so I’m back at a computer and able to bring you my favourite part of my little blog — a rundown of live music events in the Queen City, the little task that got me started on this thing in the first place.

I apologize for the lack of posts this week — I was busy studying the inside of my eyelids.

For those of us who are metal fans, we’re in for a treat this weekend. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday night at the Exchange, metal is on the agenda. Perhaps the biggest name is Black Dahlia Murder (pictured), a Michigan outfit that’s in the middle of a Canadian tour. Poison they are not.

So here we are....

THURSDAY:- Faster Gun plays at The Pump.
- Brittany Kraus and the Misters at The Crushed Grape, 8 pm.
- Sylvie and The War Doves at O’Hanlons.
- Surreal Concerts presents: Black Dahlia Murder and Soilent Green at The Exchange. $16 advance.

FRIDAY:
- Faster Gun plays at The Pump
- Nachtterror, Omen, and Kinedyne at The Exchange.
- Chad Kitchula at O’Hanlons.
- The Liverpool Invasion at Casino Regina Show Lounge.

SATURDAY:
- Faster Gun plays at The Pump.
- The Liverpool Invasion at Casino Regina Show Lounge.
- Alley 14 at McNally's, 10 pm. $5.
- Gallowgist and Chemical Horizon at The Exchange.
- Regina Madolin Orchestra's Christmas concert at The Royal Saskatchewan Museum, 7pm. $8 adults and $6 students/seniors. Tickets are available through orchestra members or at the door.

Another (Saskatoon) show

Hello friends - guitar god Zakk Wylde is returning to Saskatchewan. Remember he was came to Saskatoon last year and bought a young musician a guitar at a Saskatoon music store?

It sure seems crazy that Saskatoon is getting all of these concerts and skipping Regina. What's up with that? I'd investigate further, but I am out of my mind with the flu at the moment, so I must lie down and wonder why I bothered gettign a flu shot.

***GENERAL ADMISSION / 19+***

Shot to Hell, Black Label Society’s 2006 album, gave the band’s fans more of what they were waiting for—guitarist Zakk Wylde’s incredible fretwork, his brutal songwriting and the ferocious hard rock of Wylde and his band-mates. The album followed six previous albums, and can take its place alongside classics like 1919 Eternal, Blessed Hellride and Mafia.

In the more than two decades since Ozzy Osbourne plucked him from obscurity (at a gas station job in New Jersey) and hired him to be his new guitarist, Zakk has established himself as a guitar icon on the same level as Rhoads, Page and Eddie Van Halen, thanks to the impressive work he's done with Ozzy, as a solo artist, and as the leader of Pride & Glory and BLS. He's won practically every guitar magazine award there is, and he's regularly cited as a major influence by the latest wave of metal guitarists. For Zakk, such recognition is humbling and gratifying, especially since he and his late pal Dimebag Darrell were about the only guitarists still flying the flag for seriously shredding solos during the nu-metal ’90s. Though Wylde’s disagreements with mentor Ozzy are well documented, the two have been working together on songs, and met earlier this year to discuss a new album together. In November, the Wylde bunch heads to Europe and Scandinavia for a tour, culminating in an appearance at the Metal Hammer Hard Rock Hellfire Festival in December. Then, in 2009, these Ozzfest vets will release a new BLS album and launch a massive headlining tour. And, in perhaps the strangest development in the BLS camp, Zakk is recording a version of the Stevie Nicks/Don Henley ballad “Leather and Lace” with country star Gretchen “Redneck Woman” Wilson for a country music compilation.

Don’t miss Black Label Society with special guests Dope and Archer at The Odeon on March 20th 2009.

Eagles coming to Saskatchewan

Good Monday to all...

We have yet another concert announcement - sadly, it's for Saskatoon, and yet again, Regina misses out. It sure does help bolster the argument for a bigger indoor facility similar to the Credit Union Centre. Domed football arena anyone?

The EAGLES Will be playing TWO NIGHTS at the Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon:

Tuesday, March 10, 2009 @ 8:00 PM
Wednesday, March 11, 2009 @ 8:00 PM

Tickets go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m.
